A Bold Future

A visual representation of the strategic plan. Text over a hand drawn wellspring of rocks and water.

In January of 2022, The New Harmony Project adopted a new vision for the future of our organization. We are committed to becoming a more just, equitable, antiracist, and impactful organization, and will utilize this strategic plan to lay the groundwork for intentional growth over the next three to five years. People are the priority of this plan; we will change the who in order to change the what and how, as we continue to serve as a creative wellspring for writers and artists who are interrogating the complexity of hope.

Our Mission

The New Harmony Project is a national arts organization whose mission is to nurture writers in the development of scripts and new works that interrogate the complexity of hope. Through artist-centered programming, we care for writers so they can change the world.

Our Values

  • We will prioritize people over process, programs, or products.

  • We will be just, equitable, and antiracist.

  • We will build relationships that are authentic, mutually supportive, and in service to the needs of each person and project.

  • We will build community by connecting people to themselves and one another.

  • We will hold ourselves accountable.

In Practice

As we begin our journey towards building a more just, equitable, antiracist, and impactful New Harmony Project, we’ve already begun to implement sweeping change:

  • We’ve adopted a new mission that recognizes the complexity of hope, and a set of values that will guide each and every decision we make.

  • The 2021 conference offered support to 25 writers. 56% of whom were BIPOC, 56% female identifying, 8% transgender or gender nonconforming.

  • The 2022 selection team was comprised of 26 paid readers. 62% BIPOC, 38% female identifying, 38% transgender or gender nonconforming.

  • We’ve hired two new full time staff. One to focus on building sustainable programs, and one to focus on development and fundraising to support the mission.

  • We’ve onboarded six new board members. Five of whom are writers and artists, four of whom are BIPOC. These additions bring our board to 40% BIPOC and 46% artists.

  • We've launched a responsive, community-centered program planning process, designed to build deeper connections between the organization and the communities we serve.
